New Medicare Card Rollout and Scammer Protection
As we mentioned in our last Blog, the Medicare cards are changing!
If you’re new to Medicare now – you’re automatically going to receive a card with the new Medicare beneficiary identifier (MBI). However, if you have been on Medicare for while – prior to April 2018 – your card uses the old SSN-based Health insurance claim number (HICN) and a new card will automatically be sent to you. It’s going to be safer for you!
We’ve already been hearing stories about Scammers trying to take advantage of this situation. Medicare will not be contacting existing Medicare members and asking for ANY information. If you receive a call from someone claiming to be Medicare, Social Security, or anyone else seeking your personal information for this transition – do not provide them with any info. Simply hang up.
St. Joseph/Northwest Missouri (and all of Missouri) is in Wave 7 (of 7 total ‘waves’) of the Rollout of new Medicare cards. What we know right now is that Wave 7 will be after June 2018. Kansas residents are in Wave 3; also all we know is that they will begin sometimes after June 2018.
You can go to www.medicare.gov/newcard to sign-up to receive e-mails letting you know when the card is being delivered to your area.
